“Our community has the opportunity now to play a crucial role in the lives of children with special needs by ensuring that these life-changing programs provided by The Bell Center have a facility that allows the teachers and therapists the physical plant their work requires.”

– Benny M. LaRussa, Jr.

Founded in 1984, The Bell Center is dedicated to maximizing the potential of children from birth to three years of age who are at risk for developmental delay.  Each child works with a transdisciplinary team including a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist and an early childhood special education teacher, as well-trained Service Guild and Community Volunteers. The Bell Center is unique in that all programs take place under one roof, allowing the transdisciplinary team members to work closely together and to increase the frequency of services delivered to the child.

After more than 20 years in a 11,000-square-foot converted office building, a new purpose-built and completely ADA-compliant facility is being built to replace the crowded, inefficient, maze-like building that was not fully accessible to those with mobility challenges. Challenged to serve the needs of the enrollment of 100, the building could not support future growth. The $8.6 million Right from the Start Campaign will fund a modern, best practices facility with increased capacity and will address programmatic and equipment enhancements. At the expanded location at 1700 29th Court South in Homewood, the new 18,000-square-foot facility will accommodate up to 160 infants and toddlers. Our Bell Center children deserve:

  • hallways wide enough for children learning to use walkers or operate wheelchairs,
  • classrooms specifically designed to meet their needs,
  • space for specialized services, small group instruction and a fully-functioning sensory room, and
  • additional infant and toddler classrooms crucial to growing The Bell Center’s capacity.

Priority program and equipment needs include:

  • special equipment for playground, sensory room and two additional baby and toddler rooms;
  • classroom and support technology – Soundfield FM classroom speakers; updated digital technology;
  • program enhancements – preschool curriculum, parent coaching materials, discipline assessments;
  • additional therapeutic and mobility equipment for lending to Bell Center families; and
  • increased tuition scholarships, additional 1st and 2nd year operating reserves and restricted reserves.
